Anti-seismic devices
Whether or not earthquakes and tremors are a concern, anti-seismic devices will have a role to play. Visitors within the museum and passing traffic could both, in small ways, be affecting the stability of an object.
We use a variety of structural techniques and installed devices to protect from shock, and we look at three different levels of absorption: the building’s underlying structure, the structure of the display case, and the individual mount.
Vibrations of any kind can be a serious worry, which is why we’ve always invested so heavily in this aspect of conservation. It's part of our ongoing commitment to furthering our knowledge and meeting the very specific challenges that museums face.
