We are honored to announce that the WING display case, designed by Norman Foster with Goppion, has been selected for the ADI Design Index 2023. This selection is significant, as the ADI Design Index is an annual publication by the Association for Industrial Design (ADI), which spotlights Italian design excellence across various sectors. Each year, ADI carefully curates innovative projects and products with a commitment to aesthetic refinement, functionality, and technological sophistication. Selection in the Index also acts as the first step toward the highly coveted Compasso d’Oro award, Italy’s highest design accolade.
The ADI Design Index and Its Global Significance
Since its founding in 1956, the Compasso d’Oro award, administered by ADI, has represented a benchmark of international excellence, giving designers and engineers worldwide a prestigious platform for their work. Projects included in the ADI Design Index demonstrate qualities that go beyond mere functionality, integrating environmental responsibility, sustainability, and forward-thinking innovation. The inclusion of the WING case in this index exemplifies Goppion’s dedication to museum-grade display solutions that harmonize form and function with an astute sense of Italian design heritage.

The WING Display Case: Merging Art with Precision Engineering
The WING display case, designed by Norman Foster in collaboration with Goppion, originated as part of Foster’s retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2023. This museum-grade lectern case was engineered specifically to protect and display cultural artifacts such as books, documents, prints, and archival materials. Designed for optimal conservation and legibility, it combines advanced airtightness and climate control with versatile lighting, ensuring artifacts are both accessible and protected.
Each WING case boasts a minimalist form while addressing conservation and presentation requirements. From integrated LED lighting systems to custom display inclinations, the WING design maximizes viewer engagement while preserving the displayed materials. These cases also support a wide range of display configurations, from wall-mounted and individual units to island displays. Furthermore, they are designed to be endlessly adaptable, making them suitable for dynamic exhibitions while minimizing environmental impact through the use of recyclable materials.
A Legacy of Collaboration and Sustainable Innovation
The collaboration between Goppion and Norman Foster has a history rooted in a shared vision for sustainable, intelligent design solutions that respect the artifacts they display. Previous partnerships between Goppion and Foster + Partners, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Cartier in Motion exhibit in London, have continuously pushed the boundaries of what museum display cases can achieve.
Following the Pompidou exhibition, the WING cases found a permanent home at the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid, emphasizing their adaptability and enduring design. Their move not only illustrates Goppion’s commitment to sustainability but also reflects our approach to creating solutions that are not only innovative but also timeless. We are proud to see the WING case recognized by ADI and to continue contributing to the legacy of design excellence that ADI and the Compasso d’Oro embody. This milestone reinforces our commitment to the art and science of case design and to our partnerships with institutions dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
