The WING display case, designed by Norman Foster with Goppion, is now on show at the ADI Design Museum in Milan as part of the 29th Compasso d'Oro exhibition, and is among the works in the running for the award. The exhibition, which opened on April 15 to coincide with the National Made in Italy Day, presents the works selected ahead of the awards ceremony on May 22.
The Compasso d'Oro was founded in 1954 on the initiative of Gio Ponti and remains the oldest and among the most authoritative design awards in the world. The WING was selected for the ADI Design Index in 2024, a pre-selection that forms the pathway to the award.
The WING originated in as part of Norman Foster's retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where it was conceived to display the architect's personal sketchbooks and transparencies. No existing product on the market met the requirements, so Foster and Goppion developed a new lectern case together, combining conservation-grade airtightness and climate control with a minimalist form optimized for legibility. Following the Pompidou exhibition, the cases were relocated to their permanent home at the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid.
The Compasso d'Oro exhibition runs until June 4. During Milan Design Week and in the weeks that follow, the WING can be seen in the context of Italy's foremost design museum.
