The Museum of the Viking Age: Collaborative Reviews at Goppion’s Workshop

Over the past few weeks, we've had the pleasure of hosting multiple collaborative sessions in our workshop dedicated to the Museum of the Viking Age (Vikingtidsmuseet), with teams from Statsbygg, the Museum of Cultural History and the University of Oslo, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, Belzner Holmes und Partner Light-Design, and the Safeguarding of Objects (SGO) project. These in-depth reviews have been crucial in fine-tuning the first of over 150 custom, conservation-grade display cases designed to preserve and present the world's most significant collection of Viking artifacts.

The first showcase will house the Gustafsson-sledge, a delicate artifact from the famous Oseberg ship burial, requiring strict conservation conditions. Together, we meticulously tested and discussed every detail-from security glass to climate control and vibration mitigation-ensuring the sledge remains protected while offering visitors an unparalleled viewing experience.

The new Museum of the Viking Age, designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, will be three times larger than its predecessor, featuring the world's best-preserved Viking ships and around 5,200 artifacts. With Goppion's expertise, these extraordinary relics will be housed in state-of-the-art display cases that meet the highest conservation and security standards, safeguarding them for generations to come.
