The firm RCR Arquitectes, owned by Rafael Aranda, Ramón Vilalta and Carme Pigem, is the winner of the Pritzker Prize 2017.

Goppion had the honour of partnering the Catalan architects in 2015 when the Musée Soulages was created in Rodez.

The museum, which is dedicated to the master of abstractionism, embodies the reasons that won the Spanish trio this prestigious acknowledgement, especially the skill to tune into the landscape of the location, preserving its roots and adopting a “conscious and reflective approach”.

Built with the Master’s approval, the Museum celebrates his multiple experimental techniques through the monoliths on display. The sophisticated and targeted use of light, like the works of the artist, alternates brief shadows with dazzling bright moments. The materials too are the outcome of a joint selection; precisely, the raw steel façades merge with the landscape, while the dark red recalls the hues of the pink sandstone of the cathedral, and evokes the cupule much loved by Soulages.

Goppion engineered and produced the metal rods and over 45 display cabinets, both countertop and wall-mounted, made of steel and glass, which form the museography that was jointly designed by RCR and Philippe Maffre – MAW Architecture.
