Pietà Rondanini: Goppion’s Platform Wins “Global Best Project”

19 Jul 2016

The innovative anti-seismic and anti-vibration platform that supports and protects Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini in its new installation in the Castello Sforzesco’s Ospedale Spagnolo Gallery has won the “Global Best Project” in the Specialty Construction category, the prestigious prize awarded by Engineering News-Record magazine.

Goppion SpA, based in Milan, engineered and manufactured the metal cylindrical plinth that supports the statue, and under which it placed the anti-seismic device produced by the Japanese company THK Co. Ltd. with Miyamoto International. This installation protects the statue from shocks and vibrations caused by the two subway lines that pass below.

This award particularly honors us because we are especially fond of the Pietà, located within the Castello Sforzesco, site of Goppion’s first ever realization of museum display cases — for the Musical Instruments Museum of Milan ... A recognition of our company, but also, I think, of the brilliant Milanese ingenuity celebrated the world over.

Alessandro Goppion

The platform is part of the new exhibition design by Michele De Lucchi, created in collaboration with the Milan Politecnico, the city of Milan and the Castello Sforzesco administration.

Goppion’s high-tech installation permits an atmosphere of intimacy with the Pietà Rondanini, while isolating it from all risk.
