Fashion and the Case for Conservation

Fashion museums and costume collections present some of the most demanding display challenges in the sector. They are damaged by light, destabilized by fluctuations in humidity and temperature, and degraded by airborne pollutants. 

These constraints shape every decision about how these collections are displayed. Conservation standards for fashion and textile objects are among the most stringent in the museum sector, governing everything from light levels and climate control to the materials used in the construction of the case itself. The engineering has to meet all of these requirements while still serving the exhibition design and the visitor's experience of the object.

For fashion museums and costume collections, these requirements are compounded by the nature of the objects themselves. A couture gown is three-dimensional. It was designed to move with a body, and displaying it on a mannequin introduces structural loads that flat textiles do not face. Cases must accommodate unusual geometries, allow curators to dress and undress mannequins without unnecessary handling, and provide enough interior volume for the garment to read as it was intended, without pressing fabric against glass. The engineering has to reconcile full optical transparency with complete environmental control, and it has to do so at a scale that does justice to the work.

This is a problem Goppion has worked on across multiple institutions and collection types. At the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Paris, the challenge was to build cases large enough to immerse visitors in the world of the Maison while maintaining the climatic stability required by fragile haute couture prototypes, original sketches, and fabric samples. The largest case wraps around the viewer in an articulated, angular form, with massive sliding doors that give curators maximum access to the full depth of the exhibition space. At the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok, housed within the Grand Palace, the cases had to reconcile high-performance climate control and security systems with the historic architecture of the building, while offering dynamic, three-dimensional presentations of the royal collection.

But the relevance of this work extends well beyond institutions dedicated exclusively to fashion. Many of the world's major encyclopedic museums hold significant textile and costume collections alongside painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, and the display cases must perform across all of them. At the Victoria and Albert Museum, Goppion engineered 170 unique cases for the British Galleries, housing a collection that ranged from rings to period rooms and included fine art, furniture, ceramics, and textiles from 1500 to 1900. The cases had to provide sealed, chemically stable environments for the most light-sensitive objects while maintaining near-invisible framing and unobstructed sightlines. At the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, 280 custom cases of 80 different types protect a collection that spans medieval tapestries, royal gowns, and contemporary art. Each case was built with passive relative humidity control and VOC filtration, and the range of forms, from hexagonal to trapezoidal, reflects the diversity of the objects they hold.

What connects these projects is not a single case type or technical specification, but the underlying engineering problem. Textiles and fashion objects demand the highest conservation standards a display case can deliver, and they demand them inside forms that serve the exhibition design, the lighting scheme, and the visitor's experience of the object. The two sets of requirements are often in tension. Sealing a case for climate stability can compromise the access curators need for frequent rotation. Achieving the low light levels textiles require can flatten the visual impact of a garment whose entire purpose was color, texture, and silhouette. Solving these problems simultaneously, without one conceding to the other, is the core of the work.
